District Council Elections Campaign 2003 - Results

The May 2003 District Council Elections in South Norfolk were a triumph for the Liberal Democrats. Standing on their record of running the Council for the previous eight years they received a resounding vote of confidence from local residents, receiving an increased share of the votes cast and gaining an extra seat on the Council..

The elections confirmed that public satisfaction with the Council remains extremely high. In recent years, the Council has gained a very good reputation for innovation and working with the local community. South Norfolk's Liberal Democrats are very proud of their contribution in both these fields.

The new Council consists of 46 members - 28 Liberal Democrats and 18 Conservatives. Both the two previous Labour councillors failed to hold their seats and no Green or Independent candidates were successful.

Before May the Conservatives made very optimistic predictions about regaining control of the Council and claimed that it was their "top-priority" target in the region. In the event they achieved very little though they were helped by some of the boundary changes. They thus gained four seats, two from Labour, one from Independent and one from Liberal Democrat, but lost another to the Liberal Democrats.

Labour also had a very disappointing campaign. They fielded only 21 candidates for the 46 seats on offer, their lowest total for many years, indicating their lack of support and enthusiasm. They targetted the two wards where their previous councillors were standing but lost both of them.
