Norfolk County Council

The Liberal Democrats hold 14 seats on Norfolk County Council and play an active role in holding the controlling Conservatives to account. Liberal Democrats represent three of the twelve county divisions in South Norfolk. Within the Liberal Democrat Group, those from South Norfolk make a major contribution to the group's activities. Like the other main party groups on the council, the group is supported by a paid full-time political officer.

When the first four Liberal county councillors in Norfolk were elected in 1981 three of them were from South Norfolk. This contribution to county government has continued ever since but Liberal Democrat representation from other parts of the county has also increased. From the creation of the county councils in the 1880s up until 1993 the Conservatives (initially standing as Independents) dominated Norfolk. In 1993 they lost overall control for the first time and up until 2001 the Liberal Democrats worked with Labour to provide the county administration. The current composition of the council, elected in May 2005, is Conservatives 46, Labour 22, Liberal Democrats 14, Greens 2. The next county elections will be in May 2009.
